The largest ski resort in the Jungfrau region, Grindelwald is a jewel set in a crown of gorgeous mountain scenery. This traditional village lies at the foot of the mighty north face of the Eiger with the Monch and Jungfrau also on its doorstep. Grindelwald is a traditional yet cosmopolitan village with chalet style houses. The village is famously overlooked by the majestic mountain range of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau, which means that not only is a perfect view never far away but it is also a haven for climbers and walkers in the summer and for skiiers in the winter. One of the village’s highlights is an epic railway journey travelling through the Eiger to the Jungraujoch, Europe’s highest railway station at a height of 3,454m. Grindelwald has a large variety of shops as well as over 60 restaurants and cafes offering food from all over the world, lending it a more cosmopolitan atmosphere than many other Swiss mountain resorts.

Grindelwald is part of the largest ski area in the Jungfrau Region. The village has its own slopes and the railway and new gondola links connect into the resorts of Wengen and Murren. There are three distinct ski areas here. The ski area First offers about a quarter of the total skiing available with 5 ski lifts and 50km of ski runs and benefits from day-long sunshine. Secondly, the Wengen area offers a further 20 ski lifts and 100km of ski runs and the third section Schilthorn, based in Murren, is a little smaller than the ski area offered at First. It should be noted that the Schilthorn ski area at Murren is accessed by a spectacular rail or coach link but not by a ski link at this time. All abilities are catered for from beginners up to expert and off piste skiers. A terrain park for snowboarders in the First area offers rails, boxes and kickers. Intermediate skiers will enjoy a variety of relaxing runs as well as more challenging routes through the Kleine Scheidegg area. Thrill seekers and experts can try the famous Lauberhorn World Cup downhill piste or the infamous Black Rock run which start from the base of the Eiger. Murren also offers the nearly vertical black run of ‘Kanonenrohr’. As well as skiing there are over 80km of winter snow shoe trails as well as 60km of toboggan runs, including one of the longest runs in the Alps from the Faulhorn into the valley.

Grindelwald is a joy in summer. It has spectacular walking country with linked access to both sides of the valley either by rail, cable car or gondola. You can go from peak to peak in this area with ease using this system. The area above Grindelwald offers the majority of the walking paths in the Jungfrau region. The area has been a climber’s playground for centuries. The Flying Fox zipwire above the village in First carries you at speeds of up to 80km/hour. You can also enjoy the spectacular views from here by paragliding down to the valley. There are also cycle routes along the valley floor, as well as an indoor pool, tennis courts and mini golf.
