Discover Lake Brienz

Lake Brienz is a turquoise lake surrounded by mountains, forests and waterfalls, with picturesque villages dotted along its shoreline. The lake stretches fourteen kilometres in length and is nearly three kilometres wide. With its neighbour Lake Thun, it sits in the middle of the Bernese Oberland, an area of spectacular mountains such as the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau, with the famous ski resorts of Wengen and Grindelwald nearby.

Linked by a road and a regular boat service, it is easy to travel to and from the popular town of Interlaken in the west of the lake to the idyllic 18th Century town of Brientz at the eastern end of the lake, famous for its wood carving. Summer and winter activities are at close hand, making this the perfect area of the Bernese Oberland to buy a holiday home. Oberried is a small shoreline village minutes from Brienz. Traditionally based on farming and fishing, the village retains its traditional architecture and enjoys stunning scenery across the lake and the mountain ranges beyond.

The crystal-clear waters of Lakes Brienz and Thun are perfect for swimming and water sports. A cruise on board the historic paddle steamer Loetschberg is highly recommended. For golfers there is an 18-hole course at Interlaken, which is also home to cultural and music festivals throughout the year. There are numerous opportunities for mountain biking and walking trails along the lakes and in the mountains as well as white-water rafting and paragliding for the adventurous. Enjoy wonderful panoramic views from the Brienzer Rothorn (2350m), accessed by Switzerland’s only steam-powered rack railway. Not forgetting the majestic views of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau from Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe railway station at 3454m. East of the lake, the town of Meiringen is famous for two reasons. Not only is it the home of the meringue, but also the Reichenbach Falls, the setting for the showdown between Sherlock Holmes and his nemesis Dr Moriarty. Perhaps even more impressive are the Giessbach Falls which thunder 500 metres into Lake Brienz, following various stages on their descent.
