Myoko Ski Resort sits at the foot of a range of mountains that summit at the peak of Myoko-san at 2454 metres. The area comprises Myoko Suginohara Ski Resort, Ikenotaira Onsen Ski Resort, Myoko Akakura Snow Area (Akakura Kanko and Onsen), Seki Onsen Ski Resort, Myoko Ski Park Resort and Kyukamura Myoko Ski Resort. The mountain’s volcanic nature results in various onsen or hot springs in which one can unwind after a day’s skiing. There are over 40 restaurants in the area catering to Japanese and western tastes. Myoko Ski Resort is a great base from which to explore with Lake Nojiri and Naena waterfall close by and the famous Japan Snow Monkeys in Jigokudani Monkey Park a day trip away.

Ikenotaira has some good tree skiing and a great snow park, one of the largest in Japan. Suginohara has Japan’s longest ski run at 8.5km long, a halfpipe for snow boarders and some good tree skiing. It is particularly popular with families since it offers free skiing to children throughout the winter season. Akakura Kanko and Akakura Onsen are connected and offer terrain parks and back-country skiing. Akakura Onsen is the only resort to offer night skiing. Powder hounds flock to Seki Onsen due to its heavy snowfall and mostly ungroomed terrain. The resort remains open until the end of May when conditions allow. There are also snowmobile and snow-shoe courses throughout the area.

Myoko Ski Resort is perfect for golf lovers with nine 18-hole courses in the vicinity including Akakura Golf Course, Myoko Country Club, Apa Resort Joetsu Myoko Forest Golf Course, Madarao Toukyu Golf Club and Myoko Kogen Golf Club.

There are plenty of walking options in the area. Experienced hikers can climb Mount Hiuchi (2642 metres) which has overnight accommodation in a mountain hut. Mount Myoko (2454 metres) is a more strenuous climb, but the effort is rewarded by the views to Mount Fuji as well as the Sea of Japan.

Naena Waterfall is an impressive 55m waterfall and an attraction in all seasons and especially in Spring when the snowmelt produces a thunderous volume of water. Lake Nojiri is 5 minutes from Myoko Ski Resort by car and has a bike route around the perimeter. All sorts of water sports are available including canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, windsurfing and wakeboarding. The lake plays host to various triathlon and sporting events which include kayaking followed by a climb of Mount Hiuchi.
