Rusutsu Ski Resort is situated in the southwest of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island. The Rusutsu Ski Resort is situated in a beautiful natural highland near the base of Mount Yotei. It boasts the title of being the biggest single ski & all-season resort on the island, spread over 3 mountains and offering 42km of skiing. Recently there has been an increase in development to provide access for higher numbers of visitors to enjoy the winter and summer sports on offer and the area is attracting second home buyers from all over Asia.
Sapporo’s Shin-Chitose is 90 minutes flight from Tokyo and the bus transfer to Rusutsu Resort is around 90 minutes. Niseko is one hour away.
The Rusutsu Ski Resort consists of 3 separate mountains, West, East and Isola and sits on the opposite side of Mount Yotei to Niseko. The resort accommodates over 3,500 guests across a number of hotels, pensions and lodges. The infrastructure is first-rate with high speed lifts and a 31,200 people/hour lift capacity. Rusutsu was created initially to cater to the younger generation, therefore there is a family friendly feel to the resort.
Après-ski options include the shopping mall, game centre, Rusutsu-no-yu Big Bath with sauna, the indoor wave pool and of course, karaoke! Twenty restaurants cafes and bars offer everything from casual fast food and fun filled diners to authentic western, Chinese and Japanese food.

Rusutsu Ski Resort receives between 12-14 metres of snow each winter and its 3 mountains are serviced by four gondolas, seven quads and seven pair chair lifts. All levels of skiers are catered for with a total run distance of 42km including a 3.5km leg burner. There are 10 beginner slopes, 12 intermediate, 11 advanced and 4 expert, as well as off piste runs through the silver birch trees and powder bowls. As you would expect in Japan the runs are immaculately groomed. The board park is filled with challenging hits and the amazing pipe extends to a length of 100m. As well as night skiing there is also snow tubing, snow rafting, sledging, heliskiing, dog sledging, an inside wave pool and 2 “onsen” (hot spring spas).
Rusutsu in summer is a delight and its mild mountain climate draws visitors for hiking in the lush greenery of the surrounding mountains as well as mountain biking and horse riding. The Shiribetsu River offers rafting, canoeing, kayaking and fishing for those who enjoy water sports. The 4 golf courses are as immaculately groomed as the winter ski runs and are nestled amongst the silver birch. There are fifteen tennis courts and an indoor swimming pool. Hokkaido’s largest theme park with 8 rollercoasters, a water park with swimming pools and over 60 attractions is open from Late April to October and caters for youngsters of all ages!
