Châtel is an important resort linking the French and Swiss sections of the famous Portes du Soleil region. It is a traditionally styled mountain village which retains it old charm whilst still offering modern amenities. The Portes du Soleil ranks among the two largest ski resorts in the world, boasting over 650km of marked pistes with 201 lifts in total and spread over 14 valleys which makes Châtel an important ski destination, positioned as it is on the Franco-Swiss border. Châtel is renowned for being a family friendly resort and as such offers many beginner and intermediate slopes combined with excellent links to the vast area of the Portes du Soleil for those seeking more. The pistes are a mix of both open and forested. There are 49 pistes in Châtel with 41 ski lifts. There is also a snow park above Châtel catering to all abilities. The skiing is divided into two distinctive areas with the Linga gondola feeding skiers up to Avoriaz on the French side and the Super Châtel gondola following suit up to Torgon on the Swiss side making it a perfect base for skiing the Portes du Soleil ski area.
Chatel offers a huge range of summer activities and its position on the border of Switzerland gives you options to explore. It is a popular hiking destination with easy access to beautiful summer pastures, spectacular mountain scenery and extensive walking trails. An extensive summer lift system opens up the opportunities for mountain biking. There is a bespoke bike park dedicated to MTB fans as well as many downhill bike tracks thoughtfully built into the terrain and adapted to all levels. Lake Vonne, at the top of the village, is famous for its well-stocked trout and a popular area for fishermen. This is a popular summer destination offering activities such as white water rafting, swimming, tennis, a new aquatic centre with a large open air pool, the FANTASTICABLE zip wire and Via Ferrata to name a few.
