Discover Grimentz

A dual-season resort dating from the 15th Century, Grimentz is a picture-perfect example of a traditional Swiss village. Geranium-clad old timber barns skirt the narrow, cobbled streets and, though it attracts a large number of summer and winter tourists, it somehow manages to feel quiet and off the beaten track, making it an ideal place for families.

In the heart of the Pennine Alps, between Zermatt and the 4 Valleys, Grimentz-Zinal sit at the top of two branches of the Val d’Anniviers, a Shangri-La valley of gorges, villages and meadows. The “Imperial Crown”, a wall of some of Switzerland’s highest peaks, skirts the valley and forms a natural border with Italy. Offering a wealth of activities from the finest off-piste skiing, mountain biking and walking, to simply relaxing and recharging the batteries, Grimentz is one of the greatest playgrounds in the Alps. The village centre is traffic-free with traditional shops, family-run hotels and restaurants lining its narrow and cobbled streets. At the heart of the village is the Burgher House. Head down to its cellar and taste the famous Glacier Wine which is aged in old larch wood barrels and was traditionally only served when the Bishop visited the village. Thankfully it is now open to all comers!

The three ski areas of the Val d’Anniviers (Grimentz-Zinal, St Luc-Chandolin & Vercorin) cover 220kms of pistes with 4 snow parks and 35kms of cross-country trails. One ski pass covers them all. With skiing up to 2900m the season lasts from mid-November to end-April and the resorts cater to all levels, from the novice to the off-piste freerider. The area is famous for the quality of its off-piste skiing, considered among the finest in Switzerland, and Zinal is host to an annual Freeride competition. Non-skiers can enjoy the 120km of snowshoe trails, 110km of winter walking trails and 15km of tobogganing trails.

The resort has a huge amount to offer, from hard-core mountaineering to gentle walking by the lakes. There are 100km of mountain bike trails and the annual 130km Grand Raid mountain bike race from Verbier to Grimentz takes place every August. Brave amateurs can tackle parts of the course. There is also swimming and tennis and, for adrenaline junkies, paragliding and bungee-jumping, from the 148m high Moiry Dam above the village.
