La Clusaz Ski Area Explained.

La Clusaz is part of the whopping Aravis Ski Area and is 1 of 5 resorts in the ski lift pass which includes the resorts of Le Sambuy/Seythenex, Le Grand Bornand, Manigod and St. Jean-de-Sixt. The combined lift pass offers 254km of downhill skiing with 173 marked pistes and 150 ski lifts, whilst the La Clusaz lift pass alone offers 125km of marked runs. Skiing in La Clusaz is assured throughout the season as there are lifts as high as 2,600m, even though the village itself sits at 1,100m.

La Clusaz is a pretty and unspoilt, traditional Savoyard village and is the largest, most popular and the best known in the Massif des Aravis. There are 5 distinctive ski areas ranging from 1650m up to a snow sure 2600m. These are as follows: Massif de Beauregard – 1690m; Massif de Manigod – 1650m; Massif de Letale – 2,400m; Massif de l’Aiguille – 2400m and finally the highest peak; Massif de Balme – 2600m.

Each of these ski areas is quite distinctive. If you are a beginner or just want to work on your technique then head to the slopes of Beauregard and avoid all the adrenaline junkies. You should also venture up the Col de la Croix Fry to broaden your experience as these 2 ski areas are extremely popular with families and tend to offer a more tranquil ski experience. The Manigod ski slopes are also an attractive option for beginners and families looking for calmer and safer skiing. If you are more of an adrenaline seeker then La Balme offers a mecca of both pisted and (mainly) off piste skiing in its large bowl, as well as providing outstanding views of Mont Blanc. Intermediates and experts will find the Letale, L’Aiguille and La Balme slopes are lengthy and challenging, with some of them offering quite large verticals. All the resorts are interconnected by a complicated and efficient lift network. This is truly a resort with something for everyone!

In terms of other winter sports, the ski area of La Balme is extremely popular with speed riders who dip in and out of the area with billowing parachutes and impressive manoeuvres. There are also a variety of cross country routes with over 70km of trails. Another activity which is particular to La Clusaz is ski joëring which is being pulled along on your skis by a horse!
