A brief history of Val d’Isère.
Val d’Isère, until relatively recent times was slightly inaccessible to large volumes of visitors due to the rocky terrain and the geography of the surrounding mountains. It is, of course, the geography of these mountains that creates such a spectacular resort and it has taken some determined vision and hard work to make Val d’Isère into the iconic resort that it is today. The height of the resort means snow sure skiing which stretches vertically from 1,850m to a dazzling 3,450m, making Val d’Isère one of the best known ski resorts in the world. It wasn’t until the 1930’s that some serious collaborations took place to create a road connecting Isère to the Maurienne Valley and work continued during that decade to better the accessibility of the resort by adding a series of tunnels to reduce the risk of rock and ice falls.
The resort grew in popularity after the 2nd World War and in 1967 joined up with its sister resort of Tignes to create a larger ski area that has since expanded to become the ski area of Espace Killy, named after a triple gold Olympic winner who was a resident of Val d’Isère, Jean-Claude Killy. The combined total of both resorts is a whopping 300km of downhill skiing with a good mixture to suit all abilities. The ski area has 87 lifts and 154 marked pistes which at their highest is at 3,450m above sea level, which ensures a long and snow sure ski season.
Val d’Isère is as famous for those seeking a lively aprés ski atmosphere as it is well known for being a first class ski resort. It is renowned for its nightlife, so is popular for those that want to both ski and party hard, with many bars and restaurants including the high profiles “La Folie Douce”, opening into the early hours of the morning.
Val d’Isère property for sale is short in supply, so it’s no wonder that this new re-development called L’Écrin in the centre of the resort is causing quite a stir, with several of the apartments already having been sold before there is even a hole in the ground. Building work is due to start as early as possible in 2022 with a proposed completion date of June 2024. As new plots of land in Val d’Isère are diminishing, this is a superb example of modernizing an existing old hotel within this busy resort.
L’Écrin is in the Le Balme area of Val d’Isère, so is ideally located near to the main hub of the central ski lift station Rond Point des Pistes. It is only a 5oom walk to this central ski lift hub and the slopes. There are only 23 apartments within L’Écrin, which will all offer generous outside space with either a balcony or terrace and South-East facing views. Habitable areas start from 72m2 and ranging up to 199m2. All the apartments will have an open plan living area and will range in size from 1-5 bedroom, often with an additional bunk bedroom. Prices of the apartments start at EUR 1,605,000 for a 1 bedroom apartment and range up to EUR 6,455,000 for a 5 bedroom apartment.
This project is unique, not only because it is a renovation but also because the developer is offering the apartments fully furnished and also with an option to choose from either a contemporary or an authentic style of decorating and finish. Not only does this give the buyer some input, it also takes the “hassle” out of fitting out the apartment making it ready for either moving in or hitting the rental market as quickly as possible.
The developer has been careful to offer this project with superb facilities and as such L’Écrin includes spa facilities that would rival many 5* hotels in the world. There is a shared wellness area including a swimming pool, a gym, a sauna and a hammam.
On a more practical note, the apartments come with garage parking, a ski locker, a ski room, a cellar and a shared lift. This project is subject to the VAT recovery program.

New Val d’Isère property for sale has expanded with the recent addition of the new build project, Le Chardon. The area is considered to be very exclusive, is highly sought after and offers peace, privacy and panoramic views of the Manchet Valley. The project has been designed as an exclusive hamlet and is in a superb ski in/ski out location. A private shuttle bus service is planned for both owners and renters so that they can take advantage of both the secluded setting of Le Chardon and the buzzing nightlife in the resort. As with L’Écrin, offers have already been made on a few of the apartments as these chalet style apartments areso rare in Val d’Isère. The development is launching in Spring 2022 and is due for completion in the 3rd trimester of 2024.
Le Chardon sits on a plot of about 4000m2 of land and has views over an unbuildable area of Val d’Isère.
