Verbier: A Skiing Paradise and A Dream Property Destination

Are you dreaming of investing in a luxurious ski property in a picturesque Alpine village? Verbier, in the heart of the 4 Valleys in the Swiss Alps, may just be your ultimate destination. Known for its world-class skiing, cosmopolitan reputation, stunning mountain landscapes and charming Swiss ambiance, Verbier has become a top choice for those looking to invest in a ski property in a world famous and prestigious ski resort. Let’s take a look at why Verbier is so sought-after and the allure of buying a ski apartment or chalet for sale in this Alpine paradise.

A Prime Location in the Swiss Alps

Located in the canton of Valais, Verbier is a captivating village renowned for its stunning beauty and vibrant energy. It is only just over 2 hours drive from Geneva airport by car and it is also easily accessed via the train. You can catch the train to Martigny and then transfer to the regional line going to Le Châble. From here you can either take the postbus or the cable car (télécabine) up to the resort.

One of the key attractions of Verbier is its strategic location in the heart of the 4 Vallées Ski Resort combining La Tzoumaz, Verbier, Siviez, Nendaz, Thyon and Veysonnaz. Together they offer a whopping 410km of ski pistes as well as a huge amount of off piste skiing, a major attraction for many. Due to the extensive lift system it is easy to ski from Verbier to Veysonnaz (the furthest resort away from Verbier in the 4 Vallées) in around 45 minutes to an hour, which is certainly useful if you want to spend the day on the quieter side of the mountain. Dotted through the 4 Vallées are a large number of mountain restaurants offering traditional Valaisan delicacies ranging from full on table service restaurants to a more laid back approach if you want to just sit outside in the sunshine with a bowl of chips! Below is a picture of my delicious lunch this summer 2026 in one of the oustanding mountain restaurants on a popular hiking route in Verbier!

Where to begin in Verbier and the 4 Vallées Ski Area?

1. Starting with off piste, there is an endless itinerary for those adrenaline junkies with proper avalanche training. Popular routes are as follows:

  • Col de Mines ending in Medran - moderately steep
  • Col de Mouches linking to Tortin - a large open bowl
  • Mont Fort from the back side - very challenging
  • La Tzoumaz and Savoleyres offer runs like La Marleinaz and Vallon d’Arbi - very challenging - consider using a guide
  • Gentianes-Tortin and Stairway to Heaven - well preserved powder
  • In Bruson, La Pasay and Le Grand Tsai - tree skiing with long descents - take caution

*Always consider using a guide and have avalanche safety equipment.

2. Beginners - Verbier is perfect for beginners and they are advised to head for the following areas:

  • Les Esserts - large beginner area
  • Les Moulins - mainly for children
  • Three magic carpets (one is in La Tzoumaz)
  • La Chaux - easy and sunny runs as it is South facing - softens in the afternoon
  • Savoleyres - quiet and wide blue runs

3. Intermediate skiers are spoilt for choice in both Verbier and the wider 4 Vallées. There are a plethora of red runs split between Verbier, Siviez, Nendaz, Thyon (pictured below) and Veysonnaz. Of particular mention and well worth a visit is the well known World Cup host (29 times), the Piste de l'Ours on the Thyon/Veysonnaz side of the mountain, a wide, long and thigh burning 2km experience! The beauty of the 4 Vallées is that all these runs are accessible without unclipping your skis! You will be spoilt for choice about which ski area to enjoy and experience next. All are available to you with interconnecting lifts which means you can enjoy the full 4 Vallées experience once you have progressed from the beginner slopes. The new lift connecting La Tzoumaz to Verbier opens this ski season (2025/2026) - La Télémixte will enhance your local Verbier ski experience for the better.

4. Snowparks - There are 2 snowparks catering for different abilities:

  • Savoleyres Snowpark - generally for beginners - a more relaxed environment to practice
  • La Chaux Snowpark - popular for all levels including jumps, rails and boxes
  • Copperfield areas - there are 4 of these for extra fun freestyling

5. And finally for the more advanced on piste skiers, Verbier and the wider 4 Vallées offer some very challenging slopes, listed below:

  • The Chausorre-Tortin wall (pictured below), is mogul rich and certainly very challenging
  • From Mont Gelé there are multiple routes to La Chaux or Tortin
  • Mont Fort features a very challening track from the Mont Fort 2 tram
  • In Bruson La Pasay Noir merges two black lines

The wider Printse ski area offers 4 more black runs:

  • In Nendaz Plan-du-Fou offers Les Fontaines - a long and exhilerating run
  • In the ski area between Nendaz and Veysonnaz Greppon Blanc offers 3 steep and challenging blacks
  • In Thyon the Etherolla is definitely a must do, offering beautiful views on the opposite side of the mountain range

Verbier - Summer Appeal

While Verbier is synonymous with winter sports, its appeal extends beyond the ski season. Summers in Verbier offer a plethora of outdoor activities, from hiking and mountain biking to paragliding and golf. The pristine mountain air and panoramic views make it an ideal destination for relaxation and rejuvenation. The village hosts cultural events, music festivals, and culinary celebrations throughout the year, ensuring that Verbier remains vibrant and enticing even in the offseason.

Due to its popular dual season appeal, Verbier is a smart financial move if you can afford to invest here. The resort remains extremely popular with the rich and famous, as well as royalty and is choc full of celebrities who either own property here, most famously Richard Branson, James Blunt and Bear Grylls, or who ski here regularly such as Pixie Lott, Madonna and Ed Sheeran to name a few. The magnetic appeal of the resort means that you can enjoy rental income during the times when you're not using your property. Plus, Switzerland’s favourable tax laws and political stability make it an attractive destination for real estate investment.
