Lauchernalp

Lauchernalp is perched 2,000 metres above sea level in the Loetschental, one of the most undeveloped mountain areas of southern Switzerland and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Loetschental is a dramatic alpine valley nestled between the Bernese and Valais Alps and dominated by the 3,934 metres high Bietschorn. The golden age of alpinism in the mid-19th Century brought British mountaineers and tourism to the area, yet it was not until early in the last century that a railway opened it up to the wider world. The valley retains its rich sense of culture, manifested through its various local customs, costumes and processions. The unspoilt nature of the area is now awakening to a sense of its potential – a Valais and Switzerland of yesteryear, respecting its past yet investing in its future. A high-speed cable car will whisk you from Wiler on the valley floor to the traffic-free (in winter) centre of the resort.

Winter

At 2,000 metres snow is assured and with a top elevation of 3,111 metres Lauchernalp is renowned among ski and snowboard enthusiasts for its large amount of vertical. 55km of slopes wind down the mountain in every direction and at all levels of difficulty. There are 24km of cross country ski runs. Non-skiers can hurtle down the toboggan runs or enjoy the 50km of winter hiking trails including the highest trail in Europe with breath taking views of more than forty 4,000 metre alpine peaks. There are plenty of mountain restaurants where you can refuel in the sun at lunchtime or enjoy some apres-ski as the sun goes down.

Summer

With its unique mountain panorama, the Loetschental is one of the most beautiful hiking areas in the Valais with 200km of marked hiking trails through meadows, forests and even glaciers. There are numerous mountain bike trails and road bike routes, with e-bikes available for hire to take the strain out of any climbs. The thermal baths of Leukerbad are in a neighbouring valley, one hour’s drive away, as are the resorts of Crans-Montana, Grimentz, Saas-Fee and Zermatt.
