Champéry is a charming Swiss village in the expansive Portes du Soleil, the world’s largest combined ski and mountain bike domain which spans the French/Swiss border. Chalets with traditional roofs and carved balconies line the main street and there is a wide selection of shops, bars and restaurants.
Champéry lies in the picturesque Val d’Illiez at 1050m altitude in the Canton of Valais. It is one of the oldest tourist villages in Switzerland and it is not hard to see why. Its backdrop could not be more dramatic with the soaring peaks of the Dents du Midi and Dents Blanches mountain ranges offering spectacular views. It is situated on the Swiss side of the Portes du Soleil with easy connections to Morgins and Les Crosets and the French resorts of Avoriaz and Chatel. Morzine and Les Gets are slightly further but are easy to get to for the more experienced skiiers and mountain bikers. The Champéry Palladium, the National Centre for Ice Sports, regularly hosts ice sports training camps and competitions and offers activities both in summer and winter.
The Champéry-Planachaux cable car whisks you up to 2000m and into the winter and summer playground of the vast Portes du Soleil. The new Grand Paradis 6-seater chairlift also helps ease any congestion. The Portes du Soleil offers 650 kilometres of interconnected ski runs and 30 snowparks with 260 ski lifts connecting it all. Champery itself is perfect for intermediate skiiers who want to enjoy a quieter pace of life in a magnificent mountain setting, though strong skiers will appreciate the ski slope at Pas de Chavanette known as “Le Mur Suisse” (the Swiss Wall) which is one of the steepest in the world. Although it is only a kilometre long, the descent covers a difference in altitude of nearly 400 metres, with gradients of up to 50 degrees. Other activities include ice climbing, paragliding, cross country skiing and snow-shoe walking as well as ice skating and curling. The natural hot springs of the Thermpark in nearby Val d’Illiez are the perfect place to sooth weary muscles after a day on the slopes. Champéry plays host to the Rock The Pistes music festival, a week of live concerts on the pistes of the Portes du Soleil which is a firm favourite of the younger generation.
Champéry has much to offer in the summer especially now that it has the newly built Palladium. There is both a summer and winter swimming pool at the Palladium as well as basketball, volley ball, beach basketball, tennis and fitness on offer. Mountain bikers and walkers are spoilt for choice with 300km of MTB and 800km of hiking trails with easy lift access to the Portes du Soleil summer recreational area. Not to forget the Via Ferrata, canyoning, paragliding and horse riding. With its breathtaking scenery and numerous activities, Champéry has much to offer in the summer.
