Les Deux Alpes is a world-famous ski resort in the Isère department of the Southern French Alps. The resort is situated in the heart of the Ecrins National Park just over an hour’s drive South-East of Grenoble, and boasts skiing up to 3600m on its glacier. Les Deux Alpes is actually famous for having the largest skiing glacier in Europe and one of the largest on-piste vertical drops, at 2,268m. The resort offers plenty of attractions for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities with one of the largest snow parks in Europe. The village is home to 2000 permanent inhabitants and welcomes up to 30,000 visitors on busy weekends in the winter.
There are two ski areas on either side of the resort. The Vallée Blanche rises to 2100m and affords splendid views over the resort. The Domain d’Altitude is the main ski area rising up to the glacier. At its foot is the Front de Neige which has been remodelled and is the focus for magic carpets, a snow garden and the ski schools at the beginning of the day.
The slopes rise steeply to 2400m so most of the runs back to the resort are for good skiers. On the other hand, the higher slopes above the tree line are more varied with further zones for beginners, gentle traverses as well as the snow park. At the top of the domain is the glacier. Here you have wide open slopes for all abilities plus multiple off-piste opportunities, including over to the famous freeride mecca of La Grave. Non-skiers will find plenty to do with snowmobile excursions, snowshoe treks, tandem paragliding and the ice cave on the glacier.
The glacier is open to skiers, snowboarders and MTB enthusiasts. Lower down the mountain the bike park has 98km of slopes to explore, 22 downhill trails and 3 cross-country routes. And not forgetting the road cyclists who will enjoy the many col routes and the proximity to various Tour de France stages including at Alpe d’Huez. The Ecrins National Park is a delight for hikers of all abilities. And in the resort the sports centre has a heated swimming pool and an ice rink.
