Furano

Furano is situated in the centre of Hokkaido, Japan’s Northern most island. It is well known for its rural and picturesque landscape and is a popular dual season resort. Furano is acclaimed in the summer for its lavender fields, poppies, lilies and sunflowers. Three quarters of its 2 million annual visitors come in summer. In winter it benefits from up to 11 metres of snow fall and hosts several World Cup ski and snowboarding events. Furano is a family friendly resort and benefits from being only 2 hours by car/bus from Sapporo’s New Chitose airport.

Several new residential and holiday accommodation projects are underway. With international visitation increasing 50% annually in recent years, Furano is increasingly viewed as a smart investment opportunity and alternative to Hokkaido’s largest resort, Niseko.

Furano Ski Resort welcomes overseas visitors with its traditional Japanese charm and hospitality. There are a variety of both Japanese and Western style dining options within Furano resort as well as bars and cafes within hotels. The town of Furano is only a few minutes away and has a variety of karaoke bars, cafes and Japanese izakaya (pubs). With a plethora of mountain-based activities in both summer and winter, Furano is a true dual season resort. Such activities include winter sports, back country skiing, hot natural springs, white water rafting, kayaking, mountain climbing and hot air ballooning.

Winter

Furano Ski Resort enjoys commanding views over the surrounding Taisetsu-Tokachidake, Ashibetsu and Yubari mountain ranges. Its ski area encompasses the Kitanomine area and Furano areas creating a large ski resort by Japanese standards. Furano is well known for its abundant snow which allows for a long ski season from December through to the end of April. Twelve ski lifts serve 28 immaculately groomed pistes with 10km of blue runs, 12 km of red runs, 3 km of black runs and a snow park. Lift queues are virtually unheard of and it also has the second fastest tram in Japan serving the pistes. With ski runs open from 0800 to 2030 you can prolong that magical day until you drop! Furano is the ultimate destination for power hounds and off-piste experts, with easy access to the extraordinary “Hokkaido Powder Belt” ski areas of Asahidake, Kurodake, Tomamu, and Kamui. All are easy day trips from Furano. There is often plentiful untracked powder for days.

Summer

Furano has much to offer in the summer months. The Furano Ropeway, one of the resort’s gondolas, stays open all year round, allowing visitors to enjoy the wonderful panoramic views over the valley and the surrounding mountain ranges. A number of marked and well-maintained hiking trails descend from the summit. The area is famous for its lavender and many farms offer the chance to visit and walk amongst the fields, taking in the wonderful smell and colourful variations of the lavender plants. The Sorachi River provides thrill seekers with white water rafting, kayaking and canyoning. There is also mountain biking, road biking, hot air ballooning, paragliding and fishing in the summer months. There are 2 golf courses which combine to offer 36 holes situated in the heart of a forest. Hot springs are another attraction and a good variety of “Onsens” offer outside and inside bathing. This is a magnificent resort to visit in the summer with panoramic vistas and a huge variety of activities on offer to keep you busy, both for the thrill seekers and for those who enjoy a more sedate summer experience.
