The most famous resort in the 4 Valleys ski area, that combines fantastic and challenging skiing, apres-ski, nightlife, shopping and restaurants. Verbier is home to the chic and fashionable as well as the hard-core winter sports crowd, creating a less formal atmosphere than other high-end Swiss mountain resorts. Verbier is fêted for its winter sports, summer attractions and nightlife. It has a slate-roofed charm that belies its relatively young age, not having been developed as a resort until 1925. The majority of accommodation is chalets and hotels and this fashionable resort is popular with a broad mix of age groups. Like its fellow Valaisan resort Crans-Montana, Verbier is host to numerous events including an annual music festival as well as show jumping competitions.
Verbier is the most westerly of the resorts comprising the 4 Valleys, Switzerland’s largest interlinked ski area. Sitting in a sunny bowl at an altitude of 1500 metres, the resort’s lifts rise up to the 3330 metre Mont Fort which boasts stunning views across the Swiss Alps and over to the Mont Blanc range. While it is well covered by pistes, Verbier is world famous for the variety of its off-piste runs and itineraries. The finals of the Freeride world tour are held here each year. Equally famous as its winter sports are its mountain restaurants, dotted across the area. One can either refuel or settle in for an afternoon in the sun or tobogganing back down to the village in moonlight after a boozy fondue. Non skiers can try snowshoe walking, the pools and saunas at the sports centre, tobogganing or just window shopping in the resort’s boutiques.
There are 400km of hiking trails, 200km of biking trails, horse riding, paragliding, mountain climbing, tennis and golf from which to choose. Chamonix is one hour away by car or a scenic train journey via Martigny in the Rhone valley. Italy is also just one hour away via the Great St Bernard Pass.
