Why Ski in Veysonnaz, Valais, Switzerland?
Why you should ski in Veysonnaz, a small, family friendly resort within the popular 4 Valleys ski area in Switzerland. Our reasons for singling out this traditional and welcoming resort.
Why ski in Veysonnaz? It’s part of the 4 Valleys Ski Area…
There are many reasons to ski in Veysonnaz but probably the most important reason is that it is one of the resorts that makes up the 4 Valleys Ski Area which includes Verbier, La Tzoumaz, Nendaz, Siviez, Thyon and Veysonnaz. Verbier is clearly the most celebrated of all these resorts and prices for both buying and renting reflect this, with prime property in Verbier being sold at 15,000 – 23,000 per m2 (source UBS). However, Veysonnaz is a great resort to both ski in and buy in if you want the “best of both worlds”. Prices for both renting and buying are much lower at between CHF 7,500 – 12,500 per sqm (Nendaz/Veysonnaz, source UBS). And you have the benefit of the vast 4 Valleys ski domaine directly on your doorstep.
The Veysonnaz ski area itself offers 55km of pisted slopes and is very popular with both skiers and snow boarders alike. The slopes are less busy than some of its neighbours and there is a large variety of beginner, intermediate and advanced skiing. Queues are minimal even at the weekend and we would say that there is a peaceful, family vibe throughout the ski area. For snowboarders looking for a challenge, there is also a snow board park which is quite demanding and very interesting to watch! No blog about Veysonnaz would be complete without mentioning the thigh burning Piste de l’Ours. At a length of 2km and a gradient of 51%, it has hosted over 30 downhill world cup ski races. It takes around 30-45 minutes to ski over to Verbier for an intermediate/advanced skier, so it is easy to ring the changes and take advantage of the 410km of pisted slopes that the 4 Valleys has to offer.
It is worth mentioning that there are 2 lift passes available in Veysonnaz. The Printse lift pass is better for beginners and covers Veysonnaz, Thyon, Siviez and Nendaz and offers 210km of pistes. The 4 Valleys lift pass includes the Printse and extends over to Verbier, La Tzoumaz and Bruson, so if you are going to venture over to Verbier then this is the pass for you.
Why ski in Veysonnaz? Proximity to the cable car…
Other reasons to ski in Veysonnaz include the fact that most of the accommodation is within easy reach of the main cable car. Much of the higher property on the slopes is in a superb ski in/ski out location and the properties in the centre of the resort are within walking distance to the gondola either along the main road or along the bisse. A regular shuttle bus service is available for those who face an uphill walk.
Why ski in Veysonnaz? Restaurants, cafés and bars…
Veysonnaz is not a large resort and there is not a buzzing night life but in terms of lunches, suppers out and aprés ski, there is plenty going on if you want to find it. Directly on the piste above Veysonnaz is O Caboulis which offers lunch, après ski and dinner, with an extensive Valaisan menu as well as beautiful views and and a wonderful ambience. At the bottom of the piste is Le Magrappé, a lovely place to sit and people watch for a morning coffee before going up on the slopes. It also offers lunch, après ski and dinner. Bar Louca on the main street is a must for après ski and a lively atmosphere. If you want to go more upmarket then you will enjoy Le Greppon Blanc which has recently been renovated and has a beautiful terrace with panoramic views as well as high quality menu. For a wider choice of cuisine look no further than La Tanière which is right in the middle of Veysonnaz and is well reviewed and certainly has wonderful pizzas! Bar Le Pub is also on the main street and is a favourite with the locals. The resort has a friendly feel to it rather then a party feel but a good night out can still be enjoyed once you have taken off your skis and relaxed.
